Benefits of Membership

The Professional Investigator

The Professional Investigator is the bi-monthly publication of the Institute and is issued free to all members. The contents include authoritative articles, Institute news, comments of members, book reviews, assessment of equipment and products and there is a facility for members to advertise their own company or services.

Influencing National Policy

The Institute makes contact with Government Departments, Agencies and other recognised bodies, voicing the professional opinions to which each additional member gives increased authority. Members may publish their personal views in "The Professional Investigator" or express opinions directly to the Principal, Secretary General or Members of the Board of Governors.

Activities

The Institute promotes Seminars and Workshops which are held in various locations throughout the United Kingdom. These address matters of topical investigatory interest as well as management subjects and assist in the development of professional knowledge and skills. The Annual General Meeting is designed to be not only a working meeting where members can meet their Institute's principal officers, but additionally is usually a learning experience with the inclusion of a Seminar within the overall programme.

The Annual General Meeting is also arranged as a social function where friends and colleagues can meet for a relaxed gathering.

International Recognition

Membership of the Institute is recognised as a professional qualification by a number of overseas countries including the European Community.

Directory of Members in Private Practice

This annual publication provides a wide range of contacts throughout the complete spectrum of investigatory practice and is free to members in hardcopy and is also freely available via the Institute web site.

Codes of Ethics

All Institute participants adhere to a strict code of ethics including a Code of Practice as agreed with the United Kingdom Data Protection Registrar.

Objects

  • To provide an organisation to assist, regulate or control those engaged in investigation.
  • To assist participants to improve their academic and business knowledge in investigation by provision of categories of participation based upon an approved examination structure.
  • To provide a system of regulation of the conduct of participants to ensure that they operate within such principals and code of ethics as the Institute may prescribe.
  • To encourage persons engaged in their investigative profession to achieve internationally recognised professional academic and vocational standards and distinctions and to improve their technical expertise by promoting, organising and recommending courses, seminars, lectures and by other educational means and to recommend examination structures for the purpose of enabling participants to carry out bulleted point 2 above.
  • To promote the recognition of professional investigation as a profession by government, law and public.
